HYPOTHYROIDISM

Hypothyroidism

    •  When your body does not produce enough thyroid hormones.
    •  Treatment is simple, safe and effective and relies simply on replacing the hormones resulting in normalisation of the body functions.

    Symptoms:

  •  Vary between people, and may worsen with time
  •  Weight gain
  •  Fatigue
  •  Depression
  •  Constipation
  •  Feeling cold
  •  Muscle weakness
  •  Slowed heart rate
  •  Pain and stiffness in the joints
  •  Menstrual irregularities
  •  Hoarseness
  •  Puffy face

    Causes:

  •  Autoimmune disorder such as Hashimoto’s disease as your own body attacks your thyroid gland and causes inflammation reducing thyroid function.
  •  Overcorrection of hyperthyroidism, with medication, surgery or radioactive iodine.
  •  Surgical removal of the thyroid gland.
  •  History of exposure to radiation.
  •  Side effect of medication for other chronic illnesses.

    Diagnosis:

  •  Thorough physical examination by your doctor
  •  Serum T3, T4, TSH levels: elevated TSH levels, and low T3, T4 levels.
  •  Ultrasound neck
  •  Antithyroid antibodies

    Treatment:

  •  Treatment of the underlying cause. In case there is an autoimmune disorder, adequate medication must be taken.
  •  Oral supplements correct thyroid hormone levels and return to adequate levels and reducing symptoms of disease. Once you start treatment, it takes several weeks before you will begin to feel some relief. To make sure the medication is working properly thyroid hormone levels are tested at 6 month intervals. The dosage is adjusted as per the hormone levels.
